Abstract

A power system is complex system containing four different sections of generation transmission distribution and utilization through which the power is
transmitted from generation side to the consumer side. The power transfer requires equipment and its protection. The efficient power transfer is such that the voltage and
current are free from any types of distortions and at the same time other parameters suggest frequency, power factor, reactive power, apparent power, and so on are maintained. Different types of loads results in distortion of the sinusoidal waves and different factors such as energization of transformers or capacitor banks results in the distortion. Among different voltage issues containing harmonics, transients and interruptions, there are voltage sag and swell that contain reduced level of voltage or high level of voltage. The voltage sag or cells are damageable for the system and equipment respectively both on generation side and consumer side. The research work focuses on characterization of the voltage sags and their impact on the system. The work has been carried out by utilizing Simulink/Matlab and the results have been generated which are discussed for each situation. The results help in obtaining the information about a type of fault occurred on the basis of situation and will be helpful in dealing with that particular issue by taking appropriate step.
